Canadian Coast Guard Corrosion Removal Project

Marine & Facility Sandblasting — Victoria, BC

The Canadian Coast Guard contracted Ocean Pacific Media Blasting to perform extensive corrosion removal across multiple marine and shore-based assets in Victoria.

Constant exposure to salt air and marine conditions had caused heavy rust and scale buildup on ship components, anchoring equipment, and building infrastructure.

Maintaining these assets in a corrosive coastal environment requires ongoing surface preparation and protective maintenance to ensure safety, longevity, and operational readiness.

Corrosion Challenges in a Saltwater Environment

Marine infrastructure along the West Coast is subject to accelerated corrosion due to salt exposure, moisture, and fluctuating weather conditions. Over time, rust buildup can compromise both structural integrity and equipment performance if not properly addressed.

The scope of work included corrosion removal from:

Ship components and anchors
Marine-grade steel parts
Building surfaces affected by salt air exposure
Heavy-duty marine hardware

Each surface required thorough cleaning to remove scale and rust without damaging the underlying steel.

Sandblasting Marine Assets and Shore Facilities

Ocean Pacific utilized professional sandblasting techniques to remove heavy corrosion from ship parts and anchoring equipment. The blasting process stripped rust and scale back to clean metal, preparing surfaces for inspection, coating, and continued service.

In addition to marine equipment, Ocean Pacific was also tasked with sandblasting various Coast Guard building surfaces in Victoria. Rust had developed on exposed steel due to prolonged salt air exposure, making surface preparation essential for long-term protection.

Tug Boat Chain Rust Removal

As part of the project, Ocean Pacific sandblasted approximately 400 feet of tug boat chain to remove extensive rust buildup. Tug chains operate under constant load and harsh marine conditions, making corrosion control critical for safety and reliability.

Sandblasting restored the chain to clean metal, allowing for proper inspection and protective treatment before returning it to service.

Key benefits of sandblasting on this project included:

Complete removal of heavy rust and scale
Exposure of steel for inspection
Preparation for protective coatings
Extended service life of marine assets

Supporting Marine Safety and Asset Longevity

By removing corrosion from both marine equipment and shore-based infrastructure, Ocean Pacific helped the Canadian Coast Guard maintain operational readiness and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Proper surface preparation ensures coatings adhere correctly and protects critical assets from accelerated deterioration.

This project highlights the importance of professional abrasive blasting in marine environments—where corrosion control plays a direct role in safety, performance, and asset longevity.
