Ocean Pacific Media Blasting was contracted to complete surface preparation and coating work at the CVRD Government Refuse Waste Site, specifically at the facility used for waste sorting operations.
The building relies on a structural steel framework to support daily industrial use and heavy operational demands.
The steel beams and columns supporting the sorting facility had begun to deteriorate due to corrosion and coating failure. Over time, the protective coatings had broken down, allowing rust to develop and compromising the condition of the structural steel.
Before any long-term protection could be applied, the steel needed to be fully cleaned and exposed to allow for a detailed structural inspection.
Our team carried out abrasive blasting using 30/60 garnet media, selected for its effectiveness in removing heavy coatings and mill scale without damaging the steel substrate.
The blasting process included:
This level of preparation ensured the steel was in proper condition for evaluation.
Once blasting was completed, an inspection team assessed the exposed steel framework to identify any cracks, defects, or structural concerns.
With the inspection complete and approved, the project moved forward to the protective coating phase.
Following inspection approval, the steel beams and columns were coated with a durable epoxy coating system designed to protect against future corrosion and environmental exposure.
