Lake Cowichan Cenotaph Heritage Brick Restoration

Lake Cowichan cenotaph memorial after heritage brick restoration by Ocean Pacific Media Blasting

Heritage Memorial Restoration — Lake Cowichan, BC

Ocean Pacific Media Blasting was brought in to carefully restore the heritage brick cenotaph located in Central Park, Lake Cowichan — a community memorial honouring the local soldiers lost in service. The monument had weathered decades of exposure on Vancouver Island, leaving the masonry with layers of surface grime, biological growth, and atmospheric staining that obscured the original character of the brickwork. The project was completed on April 12, 2026.

A Community Memorial Worth Preserving

The Lake Cowichan cenotaph stands as a lasting tribute to the soldiers from the region who gave their lives in service. Like many small-town cenotaphs across British Columbia, it was built with heritage-grade brick — the kind of aged, relatively soft masonry that can be easily damaged by aggressive cleaning methods. Any restoration had to respect both the historical significance of the memorial and the fragility of the underlying material. The objective was straightforward: bring back the cenotaph’s dignity without altering the character of the original brick.

Why 50/100 Crushed Glass Was the Right Media

Heritage brick is far more delicate than modern masonry. Over time, the outer face of the brick softens and mortar joints become more brittle. Using a coarse or heavy abrasive on this kind of surface can strip the fireskin of the brick, erode joints, and permanently damage the substrate. To avoid this, Ocean Pacific selected a 50/100 mesh crushed glass media — a fine, angular, recycled-glass abrasive known for its gentle profile and clean performance on sensitive materials.

Crushed glass at this grit size offered several key advantages for a heritage project of this nature:

Lower Mohs hardness than silica sand, reducing substrate erosion
Fine, consistent particle size for controlled, delicate surface cleaning
Silica-free composition for safer operation in a public park setting
Effective removal of biological growth, soot, and surface contamination
Produces a clean, uniform finish without etching or over-profiling the brick face

This media allowed crews to lift decades of build-up off the memorial without compromising the original masonry beneath.

Careful Execution on a Sensitive Public Site

The cenotaph sits in the heart of Central Park, an active community gathering space, which meant the work had to be clean, controlled, and respectful of the surrounding environment. Ocean Pacific approached the project with the same care given to any heritage restoration — adjusting pressure, angle, and media flow to match the condition of each section of brick. Crews worked methodically across the memorial, ensuring an even, consistent result from base to cap while keeping the site tidy for the community throughout the work.

Restoring Dignity to a Lasting Tribute

The completed restoration returned the cenotaph to a clean, well-defined appearance — revealing the texture, color, and character of the original heritage brick. Preserving monuments like the Lake Cowichan cenotaph is about more than surface cleaning; it is about maintaining the integrity of a community’s history. By selecting the right media and applying controlled, experienced technique, Ocean Pacific was able to honour the memorial while protecting its structural substrate for the years ahead.

This project is a strong example of how professional media selection and heritage-sensitive technique can deliver a restoration that is both visually transformative and substrate-safe — a core principle of Ocean Pacific’s heritage restoration work across Vancouver Island and British Columbia.
