Merritt Highway Maintenance Fire

Commercial Media Blasting — Merritt, BC

A fire broke out at the Merritt Highway Maintenance Department Vehicle Service Area (VSA) in Merritt. The fire was caused by an employee inadvertently leaving a fuel-soaked rag near a heat source, which ignited and quickly filled the building with heavy smoke.

While the fire itself was contained, smoke spread throughout all six service bays, coating interior surfaces with a thick layer of soot and combustion residue. The contamination affected the galvanized ceiling panels, drywall surfaces, steel columns, and structural beams, creating both cosmetic damage and persistent smoke odor.

Extensive Smoke Damage Across Service Bays

The VSA facility is a critical operational space, and restoring it efficiently was a priority. Smoke damage had penetrated porous and non-porous materials alike, making traditional cleaning methods ineffective for full remediation.

Affected areas included:

Galvanized metal ceilings
Drywall walls and partitions
Steel columns and structural beams
High and hard-to-reach interior surfaces
Because smoke residue embeds deeply into surfaces, complete removal was necessary to prevent long-term odor issues and corrosion.

Media Blasting Selected for Effective Remediation

Stutters DKI, a fire and flood restoration company based in the Okanagan, was awarded the overall restoration contract. After evaluating remediation options, Stutters DKI selected Ocean Pacific Media Blasting to perform abrasive media blasting to remove soot staining and eliminate smoke odor at the source.

Media blasting was chosen because it provides deep, uniform cleaning without the need to remove and replace large sections of building materials.

Controlled Media Blasting Process

Ocean Pacific mobilized crews to carefully media blast all affected interior surfaces across the six bays. The blasting process removed smoke residue embedded in metal and drywall surfaces while maintaining the integrity of the underlying materials.

Key benefits of media blasting on this project included:

Complete removal of soot staining
Elimination of embedded smoke odor
Preservation of existing structural components
Reduced need for material replacement

The controlled approach ensured consistent results across all bays while minimizing downtime for the facility.

Cost Savings and Project Outcome

By using media blasting instead of full material replacement, the overall cost of restoration was significantly reduced. Structural components that would otherwise have required removal were successfully cleaned and restored, allowing the project to progress quickly into repainting and refinishing stages.

The results exceeded expectations, delivering a clean, odor-free environment and restoring the facility to operational condition without unnecessary demolition.

This project highlights how professional abrasive blasting can play a critical role in commercial fire restoration—providing effective remediation, cost savings, and long-term performance when dealing with extensive smoke damage.
