View Royal Casino Concrete Floor Restoration

In March 2018, Deramore Construction was in the process of expanding the View Royal Casino, located just outside of Victoria.
As part of the expansion, large sections of new concrete flooring were poured throughout the facility.
Once the concrete had cured, it became clear that the finished surface contained numerous imperfections. Trowel marks, surface inconsistencies, and blemishes left the floors uneven in appearance—unacceptable for a high-traffic commercial environment where both aesthetics and durability matter.
Concrete Imperfections Identified After Pour
Concrete floors must meet strict standards in commercial spaces, especially in public venues such as casinos. Even small inconsistencies can become highly visible once final finishes are applied or lighting is installed.
The issues identified included:
Surface blemishes and discoloration
Uneven texture across large floor areas
Minor ridges and inconsistencies from finishing
Lack of a uniform visual appearance
Rather than resorting to grinding or overlay systems, Deramore Construction opted for a controlled sandblasting approach to correct the surface.
Precision Sandblasting for Concrete Surfaces
Ocean Pacific Media Blasting was brought in to lightly sandblast the concrete flooring and restore a consistent finish across the newly poured areas. The goal was to eliminate surface imperfections while maintaining the integrity of the concrete.
A 30/60 grit copper slag abrasive was selected for this project. This media provided the ideal balance—aggressive enough to remove surface blemishes, but controlled enough to avoid over-profiling or damaging the slab.
Importance of Media Selection and Operator Skill
Concrete sandblasting requires experience and precision. If concrete is over-profiled, the damage cannot be reversed, making operator control and media selection critical to success.
Key factors in this project included:
Selecting an abrasive coarse enough to clean, but not gouge
Maintaining consistent blasting pressure and movement
Avoiding excessive removal of surface material
Achieving uniform results across thousands of square feet

Several thousand square feet of concrete flooring were sandblasted during the project. The result was a clean, uniform surface free of blemishes and inconsistencies, ready for the next phase of construction and finishing.
By using sandblasting rather than more invasive correction methods, the project timeline and costs were kept under control while achieving a high-quality result.
